There are currently two types of female performers in the country music world. There are those that have a more girly girl feel and tend to be positive and upbeat with their songs, and then there are those that are a bit more edgy and aren’t afraid to talk about the darker sides of love and life. Jonalee White however, doesn’t fit into either side, but rather perfectly combines both sides of the female spectrum together and easily is going to catch your attention with her latest album “Wake Up.” Her modern poppy yet traditional brand of country music hits your from the get go as the album opens with “Sunday Paper,” and instantly captures your attention with her outstanding vocal and edgy lyrics that tells a past lover to basically shove it because she doesn’t want to hear his excuses anymore. She continues to display the edge in her lyrics as you begin to work your way through the album on tracks like “Husband #2” and the Phil Everly penned Linda Ronstadt hit “When Will I Be Loved.” But Jonalee White isn’t all about tongue and cheek lyrics as she also proves that she can write a tug at your heart song with realness and relatability. On a track like “Without You Tonight,” she faces the harsh realities of what it actually takes to make it in the music industry and faces what has to be left behind to do so. Wrap all of this around a few true country styled tunes with a traditional feel that will have you on the dance floor like “Feel Like A Woman” and album closer “What If” and you have one heck of an impressive album from what is easily a new artist to keep your eyes on.
