The Christian Country genre is a genre that is well worth exploring for a variety of reasons but no matter which reason you do it all comes back to the positive vibes that the faith driven genre and albums create to the listener’s ear. For Russ Murphy, a preacher that eventually made his way to Nashville to pursue his music and songwriting, he has encompassed what the genre is all about and delivered it on his latest effort For All You’ve Done. Murphy instantly offers a foot-tapping country song, “Godly Man,” to kick off the album as he sings about the constantly changing world we live in as he reaches out to God in the chorus through an open prayer type lyric. These Christian driven songs continue to pour out as you push through the album with cuts like “Jesus Is Enough,” the touching thank you letter to Jesus on “For All You’ve Done,” and “Wood and Steel,” a very well-crafted story song that sees Murphy reflecting on his youth and spending time with his grandparents learning what Christianity was all about. Not to be only pigeonholed as a Christian artist, Murphy also showcases his ability to write a love song on “Without Your Love” and also includes his brand of the patriotic type country songs as well with “Welcome Home Soldier” to round out the album. The genre isn’t one that is for everybody, but I think we all could use some of the positive vibes that Russ gives off with his music and spirituality and this album is a good starting point to get them from.
