Nashville is a melting pot for any artists, bands, or musicians that want to throw their hat into the music world whether it is in the country market, Americana, folk, etc… For The August, the move to Music City happened after their bassist left the band and they had nothing left to lose. Although a lot of bands move to town it is a rare occasion when one comes loaded and ready to go with raw talent the way that The August have and they show it throughout their debut album “Thistle, Sparrow, and the Tall, Tall Grass.” By writing every song on it, they put it all out on the table and expose who they are to the listener. “Gatsby,” which opens the album let’s you instantly hear the musicianship you can expect throughout it as they blend an Americana and folk sound together musically, while Jacky’s vocals help to deliver the well-crafted lyrics. The foot tapping rhythm of “Gatsby” continues to be on display as you dive forward into the album with cuts like the upbeat and fun “Drunken Picture,” “Katie,” and the Bonnie Raitt tinged “On Your Way To Gone.” They do show a softer side as well on the album with the more slowly paced songs like “Alone” and “Call You Up,” which explore elements of losing in love to the album, but tracks like these are few and far between as they choose to keep things a bit more upbeat and keep your foot tapping along. If Nashville is going to be the stepping stone to making the members of The August stronger writers, musicians, and all around artists then I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this band because they a pretty strong now in all aspects of their music already as this album shows throughout.
